Waterproof Plywood for Kitchen and Bathroom: A Bangladesh Guide

The kitchen and the bathroom are where plywood is tested hardest. Constant humidity, spills, steam and the occasional leak will find any weakness in a board or its edges. Choosing and installing the right plywood here prevents the swelling, delamination and musty smell that ruin cabinets within a year or two.

Specify BWP, not MR

For wet zones, boiling-water-proof (BWP) plywood — often called marine plywood — is the correct choice. It is bonded with phenolic resin that survives prolonged moisture and steam. MR-grade board, however cheap, simply is not built for this environment and will eventually fail. This is the one place you should not economise on grade.

Edges are where failure starts

Even the best waterproof plywood can absorb water through unsealed cut edges. Every exposed edge should be properly sealed and edge-banded. Around sinks and under counters, apply a sealant to raw cuts before fitting. Most cabinet failures in Bangladeshi kitchens begin at a neglected edge, not the face of the board.

Mind the termites too

Wet timber attracts pests. Use plywood that is both waterproof and treated against termites and borers, so the cabinet is protected on both fronts. In a warm, humid kitchen this combination is what buys you years of trouble-free service.

Installation checklist

Before your carpenter starts, confirm these points:

• BWP / marine-grade board for all carcasses near water.
• All edges sealed and banded, including hidden ones.
• Termite-treated plywood specified on the order.
• Adequate gap and ventilation behind units so trapped moisture can escape.
