MR, BWR, BWP — the letters on a plywood sheet decide whether it survives a Dhaka monsoon or falls apart. Here's what each grade really means and where to use it.
Bangladesh is one of the most demanding climates for wood: months of high humidity, a heavy monsoon and warm temperatures that speed everything up.
The most important choice when buying plywood here is the bonding grade — the glue that holds the veneers together. Get it right and furniture lasts a decade. Get it wrong and it delaminates within a year.
MR plywood — moisture resistant
MR-grade plywood is bonded with urea-formaldehyde resin. The name is often misread as "moisture-proof". It is not.
MR resists everyday humidity and the occasional splash. That makes it right for dry interiors: wardrobes, bookshelves, bedroom furniture and wall partitions. It is the most economical grade.
BWR and BWP — for water and steam
Both grades use phenol-formaldehyde resin, which does not break down under prolonged moisture or steam. They cost more, and in a humid country they are worth it wherever water is present.
BWR: boiling-water resistant
BWR suits kitchens, utility areas and spots that get wet now and then, such as near a window that takes rain.
BWP: boiling-water proof (marine plywood)
BWP is the grade often called marine plywood. Use it for bathroom vanities, sink cabinets and any joinery that meets water regularly.
A simple room-by-room rule
You do not need to overthink this. Match the grade to the exposure:
- Bedrooms, living rooms, wardrobes, office furniture — MR is sufficient and cost-effective.
- Kitchens, utility areas, anything near a window that takes rain — BWR.
- Bathroom units, sink cabinets, outdoor-adjacent joinery — BWP / marine grade.
Don't forget termites
Moisture is only half the battle. Termite and borer attack is common in Bangladesh, so look for plywood that is chemically treated against pests as well.
A board that is both boiling-water proof and termite-treated is the safest long-term choice for wet zones.
When in doubt, ask for the specification sheet. A trustworthy manufacturer will state the resin type, core species and treatment — and won't relabel an MR board as something it isn't.

What is the difference between BWP and MR plywood?

Is MR plywood waterproof?
